Electric trikes for adults are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. They're easy to ride, fun for kids, and great for exercise.  But how do you choose which type of electric trike is best for you? That's why we've put together this guide. It tells you everything you need to learn about electric trikes for adults. So whether you're looking for something for yourself or someone else, read on. And remember, if you have any questions at all, feel free to contact us.  Thanks for reading!

In this guide, you will learn what is an electric trike, what features to look out for, and which ones will suit you best. Finally, we'll show you some of the best electric trikes currently available.

Let's start with the basics, what exactly is an electric trike, or "e-Trike"? An electric trike is basically a bicycle with three wheels instead of two. This means that they're easier to ride than regular bikes because there's no need to balance on two wheels. They also make riding much faster and easier, because they're powered by electricity rather than pedaling. There are several different types of electric trikes available, so which one should you buy? Well, that depends on what you're looking for.

Size and Weight capacity of an Electric Trike for adults.

The first thing you should take into account when buying an electric trike is size and weight capacity. On our product pages under the "Specifications" tab, we always make sure that we clearly specify the weight capacity. Typically our trikes can fit riders from  4'8" to  6'3" and have a weight capacity of up to 330lbs, but every trike is different, so make sure to check before you buy to ensure the safety and comfort of the rider.

Check the wheel base between the back wheels!

People sometimes forget that an electric trike for adults is not as easy to store as an electric bike. Take into consideration where you will store the trike and if there are narrow sidewalks that may become an issue after purchase.

If storing your trike will be an issue, check out some of our folding tricycles. Best Folding Trikes

Electric Trike Drive Systems

Similar to e-bikes, electric trikes break down into 2 different types of drive systems. Mid-Drive, and Front Hub Motor. To break this down in very simple terms, the drive system is where the motor is stored and where the power that turns the wheels comes from.

The Mid Drive is located in the middle of the trike providing power from the chain directly to the rear axle.

Mid-drive trikes can in some cases be superior because the weight of the motor is distributed evenly among all 3 wheels and the motor is actually built right into the frame of the trike. Because of this it can also be much more expensive for purchase and repair.

Front Hub-Drive

Front Hub-Drive is what you are going to find on 90% of the trikes on the market. It is located in the front wheel of the bike that can pull the trike forward. These are preferred on electric tricycles for many reasons, for one they are much more affordable. They are also much easier to repair or replace because you can simply take off the front wheel, whereas with a mid-drive you have to take off the bike pedals and chain.

Also, something to note is that if you take a corner too fast on an electric trike there is a possibility that it can flip over. So there is no reason to have a powerful, expensive mid-drive system in an adult electric tricycle.

Electric trike for adults: ride modes

Electric trikes come in a variety of ride modes to accommodate different needs. The most common electric tricycle ride modes are the pedal-assist system (PAS), throttle, and pedal only.

Pedal-Assist System (PAS)

PAS mode is the most popular because it provides assistance from the electric motor only when the rider pedals. This gives the rider the feeling of a regular bike ride with a little extra help.

Throttle mode

Throttle mode is ideal for riders who want to get around without pedaling or for those who need more power for climbing hills.

Pedal-only mode is best for riders who want a workout or for those who are trying to conserve battery power.

Electric tricycles offer a unique and enjoyable riding experience that is perfect for those with fitness or mobility issues. With the ability to peddle like a regular trike, Electric trikes make it easy to get around while still getting some exercise. Additionally, Electric trikes offer throttle or PAS mode to power uphill or cruise the rest of the way home. This makes Electric trikes an ideal option for those who want an easy and convenient way to get around. Whether you are looking to get some exercise, or just want an easy way to get around, Electric trikes are a great option for you.

Volts, Watts, Amp, and Amp Hours

While it may seem like there are a lot of confusing terms when you first look at an electric trike's specifications, we're going to try our best to break everything down so that even beginners will understand what all this means.

Electric vehicles, including electric trikes, use volts to measure electric potential and are symbolized with a "V." Electric potential is similar to water pressure in a hose. The higher the voltage, the higher the pressure of the electrons flowing in a circuit. Electric tricycles typically have a voltage of 24-52volts.

Watts (W): A measure of power/total output, similar to Horsepower. 745.7 Watts are equal to 1 hp. Your 300hp internal combustion car engine is also a 223,710-watt engine.

An amp is also known as an ampere, and it's a unit of electrical current. This is the volume of electrons flowing in a circuit. Think of this as the same as how much water is flowing in a hose. A fire hose has a much higher volume of water flowing through it than a 1-inch garden hose. A 50 amp circuit has many more electrons flowing through it than a 10 amp circuit.

Amp-Hour (Ah)

The amp-hour (Ah) rating tells you how long a battery will provide one hour's worth of power with continuous use.

The watt-hour (Wh) is an important measure of energy capacity in electric batteries. It's the amount that can be stored for one hour and then released to power something like your refrigerator or light bulb!

Which Type of Electric Tricycle Throttle Is Best?

When it comes to electric trike throttles there are typically 3 types of throttle: Thumb throttle, half twist throttle or full twist throttle.

Your electric tricycle’s throttle is the physical connection between you and your trike. While the pedal assist is a great benefit to your electric trike, it's still very important to choose the right throttle for you! Let's talk about some of the pros and cons..

Thumb Throttle

Electric tricycle throttles come in a spring-loaded trigger or button form and are located on the handlebars. One benefit of thumb throttles is that they create extra room on the handlebars for twist shifters. However, a disadvantage of thumb throttles is that on long straight journeys, your thumb can become cold and stiff - which is not ideal for someone with arthritis.

Full Twist Throttle

As the name suggests, twist throttles are located on the handlebars very much like a motorbike throttle and you have to twist the full grip to use the throttle. Twist throttles can be a lot of fun and in some cases can be better for people with arthritis or who just don't have good mobility in their fingers.

Half Twist Throttle

Electric tricycle half-twist throttles operate similarly to full-twist throttles but only cover a small part of the handlebar grip. Typically, you use your middle and index finger to accelerate. I found the half twist the most comfortable because you can twist the throttle and still grip the handlebars with the same hand.

Pro Tip!

When using twist throttles, reach forward on the handlebars about an inch so you can keep your wrist and hand at a straight angle when you accelerate to avoid strain on your wrists

What to Look for When Buying an Electric Trike

When shopping for an electric trike, there are several factors to consider.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Range: The range of an electric trike refers to the distance it can travel on a single charge. Look for a trike with a range that fits your needs, whether it's just a few miles or up to 50 miles.
  2. Speed: Most electric trikes have a top speed of around 20 mph, but some models can go faster. If speed is important to you, look for a trike with a higher top speed.
  3. Motor: The motor is the most important part of an electric trike. Look for a trike with a powerful motor that can handle your weight and any hills or inclines in your area.
  4. Comfort: A comfortable seat and adjustable handlebars can make a big difference in how enjoyable your ride is. Look for a trike with these features, as well as front and rear suspension if you plan to ride on rough terrain.
  5. Storage: Many electric trikes come with baskets or other storage options, which can be a convenient feature if you plan to use your trike for errands or shopping.

Are Electric Trikes Safe?

Electric trikes are generally safe to ride, but it's important to follow all safety guidelines and wear protective gear. This includes a helmet, reflective clothing, and possibly even elbow and knee pads. Always follow traffic laws and be aware of your surroundings, especially when riding on busy roads or paths.

Are Electric Trikes Street Legal?

The legality of electric trikes varies depending on the location. In some areas, electric trikes are considered bicycles and can be ridden on bike paths and lanes. In other areas, they may be classified as motor vehicles and require a license or registration. Be

sure to check local laws and regulations before riding your electric trike on public roads.

Electric Trikes for Seniors

Electric trikes can be a great option for seniors who want a comfortable and easy-to-ride mode of transportation. They can help seniors stay active and independent, as well as provide a way to run errands or meet friends without having to rely on a car or public transportation. Look for a trike with a comfortable seat, adjustable handlebars, and a step-through frame for easy mounting and dismounting.

Used Electric Tricycle for Adults

If you're on a budget, buying a used electric trike can be a good option. However, it's essential to check the battery life, motor power, and overall condition of the trike before purchasing. Some reputable sources for used electric trikes include local bike shops, online classifieds, and auction sites.
